DATES:

CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES:
    1. Performance and Monitoring
      • The features of the Db2 PM monitoring tool.
      • Use the Db2 Performance Monitor or another tool for generating performance reports and analyzing the results.
    2. I/O and Storage Management
      • The effects of queries and updates on I/O.
      • Use the Db2 Performances Monitor for generating reports and analyzing the EXCPs, TCB, cache hit ratios, and wait times.
    3. CPU
      • The effect of queries and updates on CPU processing.
      • Use the Db2 Performances Monitor for generating reports and analyzing the CPU supervisor and application time, wait time, and idle processing.
    4. Memory
      • The effects of queries and updates on memory.
      • Use the Db2 Performance Monitor for generating performance reports and analyzing the CPU supervisor and application time, wait time, and idle processing.
    5. Catalog and Directory
      • Examine the basic flow and structure of the catalog.
      • Perform walkthrough operations using the catalog.
    6. Physical Database Objects
      • Perform the steps for transforming a data model into a physical schema and ultimately to a set of physical database structures in Db2.
      • Determine the techniques for designing an object to achieve optimal performance.
    7. Locksize
      • Issues regarding performance and LOCKSIZE.
      • Specify LOCKSIZE ANY for all tablespaces that are not identified as 'read-only'. There is an exception to this standard; this occurs when a determination has been made that all updates to the table are performed in batch by a single job and accordingly LOCKSIZE table is then recommended.
      • As a result of the additional overhead associated with maintaining row-level locks, the use of LOCKSIZE ROW is permitted when a high level of application concurrency is necessary.
    8. General Application Design
      • Gather information to examine application requirements: size of the Db2 objects, throughput of the application, and frequency and type of processes.
      • Review common logical and physical table design cases to understand the performance implications when designing tables with Db2. There is no single solution which is common to all requirements.
      • The solutions must be implemented which best fit a problem, business, or website.
    9. Locking and Concurrency
      • The effects of locks on resource consumption.
      • Monitor and record the locks and associated resources with running a progression of queries and updates.
